Question: Should I pay for the article I have received/found?

We will only charge you for an article from the British Library if you do not collect the article within 30 days. Before we put in the request to the British Library we will confirm with you that this is an article you still need sight of. Otherwise we will charge you if you request an item for non-work reasons where we would be charged the cost for obtaining this. However we do not charge without informing you as the individual first.

If you have found an article which is asking you to pay first check whether you are logged in to OpenAthens. If it still asks then it is likely to be a resource which we have not purchased. You can also check using the NICE Journals A-Z to see whether we hold this journal title.

If we don’t have access then contact the library to see if we can obtain a free copy for you, citing whether it is just for your personal use or for other members of the team to also have view of the article. This determines what copyright we need to apply to the article. Most of the time we will be able to obtain this as we speak to all health libraries in England or use the British Library where necessary. If we do need to go to the British Library we will ask you first how essential it is you have access to this as there is a cost to the Trust.
